This film was made using a special still lens called a tilt shift lens which is normally used for very technical images but can be used to create this toy town look. The still images are then assembled together to create a stop frame animation.

I mentioned Neil Turner’s site in last night’s class, there is loads of information on his old site such as this one on mixing colour temperatures (white balance). He now places his new tips on his blog which you may also find useful.

He often delivers talks around the country which can be really informative.

Jeff Curto produces a regular podcast on photographic theory, if you load them onto your MP3 player you can view the images on the screen as Jeff talks about a topic. Great for the next time you are waiting for a bus.

Barry Lewis took a large white tent out to various locations accross the UK to photograph people in a style similar to that of Irving Penn or Richard Avedon.  By using the simple white or occasionally black background he has isolated the people from their context. I know some of you have tried or are using The GIMP as an open source (free) alternative to Photoshop, it is however not always easy to find training or support. This link takes you to some documents and links produced by TASI at the University of Bristol.

This online camera simulator explains the different exposure modes and the relationship between ISO, the shutter and the aperture. It also shows you what happens if you get it wrong.

This site has some good tutorials on lighting for portraiture and still life.  The examples do tend to use expensive studio flash but for many of these pictures smaller flash or tungsten lights (builder’s lights ) could be substituted.
