Ideal focal length lens for portraiture

I thought I should post this discussion on the ‘ideal’ lens for portraiture. The discussion does range widely from using wide angle lenses through to short telephoto. There are photographers who use very wide angle lenses to produce great portraits, look at the picture of Paul Smith on Platon’s site. I think most agree that a lens of around 50mm on a cropped sensor or 80mm on a full frame sensor is the most flattering. For compact cameras choose a zoom setting that is slightly telephoto.
